With the start of school just around the corner, Labor Day weekend is the last big hurrah to close out another beautiful summer. Fortunately, there are all kinds of exciting events happening in and around Milwaukee to help you celebrate. From food, to cultural festivals, to art, there’s something for the whole family to enjoy before it’s time to step out of vacation mode. Here are a few things we’re looking forward to for this Milwaukee Labor Day 2019:
Big Gig BBQ
No summer bucket list is complete without a big BBQ! And, that’s exactly what you’ll get at the Big Gig BBQ event happening at Henry Maier Festival Park on Sunday of the long Labor Day weekend. Several of the region’s best BBQ restaurants will be serving food accompanied by live music by a number of great bands. The Big Gig BBQ extravaganza will also include all kinds of fun and games, even a $5K giveaway, as well as an Amateur Rib Cooking Competition. Trust us, you won’t want to miss this event!
Wisconsin Highland Games
This family-friendly event out at the Waukesha Expo Center includes activities that celebrate all of the cultures of the British Isles and the Celtic nations, including Ireland, Wales, Britain, and others. Highland Games highlights include highland dancing, ax and knife throwing, longbow, single-stick fencing, as well as the crowd favorite piping and drumming. There will also be lots of Celtic dogs at the event available for petting, including Irish wolfhounds, Scottish deerhounds, and golden retrievers. And of course, no festival is complete without live music, food, drinks, and fun exhibits. The festival will begin Friday afternoon of Labor Day weekend and run until Sunday night.
You don’t have to be into motorcycles to have a blast at this event. The five day, outdoor Harley-Davidson festival features more than just a glimpse at some cool custom bikes. Event goers will also enjoy thrilling stunt shows, live music, food and drinks, and even rides on Harleys!
St. Francis Days
Just a few minutes south of Milwaukee at the Milton Vretenar Memorial Park in St. Francis you’ll find an exciting event with all sorts of things for the whole family. The four-day St. Francis Days event features everything from a petting zoo, to a martial arts demonstration, to a polka mass. Guests will also be treated to live music and the city’s largest parade, which kicks off on Saturday morning.
Third Ward Art Festival
If you’re looking to end your summer with a bit of creative vision, don’t miss the Third Ward Art Festival. There, you’ll be able to wander art studios in former warehouses, galleries, and performing arts venues for inspiration and enjoyment. The event will take place on the Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend and feature almost 150 juried artists displaying and selling their works. From paintings, jewelry, sculptures, pottery, photography, and more, there’s something for every taste and pace. There will even be art fest bingo and spin art, as well as live music.
